The afternoon was waning and as we approached the Virginia/ NC border we explored options for our evening repose. We knew from an earlier excursion that Lake Kerr is a huge camping area. The lake is actually a reservoir created by the John H. Kerr Dam and is owned by the Army Corps of Engineers. What we did not know is that you have to make a reservation 24-48 hrs in advance of your arrival depending on whether you’re on the Virginia or N.C. side. Lake Gaston is also in that area but I could only locate a private RV park there and I did not think the Hyundai would pass. I could hardly contain my disappointment about not being able to camp but, trooper that I am, quickly started googling the nearest hotels in South Hill, VA. Home to a museum about tobacco warehouses & some wacky woman’s collection of dolls, it seemed like the perfect spot to stop. However since the 6 hotels listed in the town’s visitor website did not sport flashing neon signs, Don came to the conclusion that he had driven “through the whole town” ( 1 street) and therefore the hotels must not exist. I decided not to launch the obvious existential argument his logic was begging for and instead we continued down the road. Now, when I reach my limit it comes abruptly and unpleasantly and as we passed through South Hill it happened. Recognizing how quickly things can go downhill at this point, Don raced toward the next nearest town to find the first lodging available. That’s how we ended the first day in Henderson, NC.
