Making Spirits Bright

O Little Town of Bethlehem

O Little Town of Bethlehem

I’ll admit that I have a problem. For quite a few years now I just don’t have the Christmas spirit until I visit Christmastown, USA which is otherwise known as Bethlehem, PA. We stumbled upon Bethlehem quite by accident one year. We were headed to New York to visit my sister and didn’t want to make the long 7 hour trip in one fell swoop. Looking for a place to stay the night, we noted that Bethlehem had a new casino and since it was a good three hours away from home we decided to stop.

My annual donation to The Sands Casino Resort.

My annual donation to The Sands Casino Resort.

Although he is not much of a gambler, Don enjoys the casino for another reason. There is a location of the Carnegie Deli inside the casino. As native New Yorkers who transplanted to Dixie we don’t often get good deli food. Don attempts to cram all his favorites into one meal.

Corned beef on rye

When I am in the casino I get flashbacks of the episode of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” where Frank (played hilariously by Danny DeVito) is gambling with his old associates from Viet Nam. These flashbacks occur when we are being dropped off by our shuttle driver in the area where the buses from Chinatown in New York park and wait for the overnight Asian run. If you’ve never seen the show you are missing some depraved comedy.

Pow gai anyone?

The Sands also has a shopping mall so when I blew through all my gambling money I dragged Don there.

The next morning we head into town so I can get my “Ho Ho” on. The homes and shops in town just do a spectacular job with their Christmas decorations.

When my town itch has been sufficiently scratched we head over to the grounds of the old Bethlehem Steel Mill which is the current home to the annual Chriskindlemarket. This is a crafts market comprised of two huge tents with an outdoor marketplace in between the tents. It also houses a huge, diverse food court (Don’s favorite) and a stage with live seasonal entertainment.

We needed to retrieve Damian from a weekend visit to Luray, VA and decided that since it was such a glorious day we would venture into the George Washington National Forest. The Massanutten Story Book Trail is an easy walk to a vantage point that affords a spectacular view of the Page Valley.

The Skyline Drive is mobbed on a Fall weekend and you have to pay to see those views. The Massanutten access is free, parking is plentiful and uncrowded, there are many different trails you can access with varying degrees of difficulty and the views are awesome.

After our foray into the forest we head to Luray ( pronounced: “Loo-ray” if you are locals like us). This is one pretty little town with a busy art scene. We had a nice lunch at one of the local establishments and then browsed an art gallery that was populated with works from local artists.

Making A Mountain Out Of A Mole Hill

Mole Hill

Mole Hill

I never knew that The Old Dominion was once a hotbed of seismic activity. Yup, there were volcanoes in Virginia. Today we set out looking for lava in all the wrong places. Actually, they were the right places. The place was just west of Harrisonburg, VA. Rockingham County has some lovely rolling countryside and is an agricultural center that Don & I became very familiar with while our son, Eric, attended The Virginia Military Institute.
We arrived in Harrisonburg and Don was ready for lunch. When in a college town (Harrisonburg is the home of James Madison University) and you want good eats you ask a college kid where to go for grub. We were not let down by the 3 young coeds I encountered on the side of the road. We were lead to a parking lot of food trucks.

Don dropped the “My wife does a food and travel blog” line and scored himself some free clam chowder. It was absolutely delicious. I had a “Rueben” sandwich that was baby bella mushrooms grilled on rye bread with muenster cheese, sauerkraut and thousand island dressing. Also very tasty and a tummy filler.

However, Don said that the truck with the Mexican food was the outstanding winner. The amazing beef tacos were $1 each. Filling and frugal – just what we love. Thanks JMU girls, ya did good by us.

We head west out of Harrisonburg and on to Mole Hill.

Approaching Mole Hill

Approaching Mole Hill

Mole Hill is what’s known as a dyke, which is a conduit that shunted molten igneous rock up into a volcano. As far as volcanoes go, it’s pretty young at 45 million years. It’s made of dark, igneous rock and has crystals of a green mineral called Olivine in it. This is the last remaining vestige of volcano in Virginia. But wait, there is another Virginia landmark that offers more evidence of volcanic activity in VA! We set out to find it. However, Don has spotted an obscure sign for a museum that offers an “electric map” of Stonewall Jackson’s Valley Campaign. If you know my husband at all, you are aware that he has a passion for the “War of Northern Aggression” (his words). His ultimate Civil War hero is Stonewall. He has now requested that we stop at said museum.

The Rockingham County Heritage Center had some very nice exhibits of Folk Art native to the area. The “electric map” is a snore fest.

These amazing structures are the result of an intrusion of molten igneous rock that burst through the crust. This occurred about the same time Mole Hill developed and the chimneys are made of different layers of rock.

Trick or Treat

When you live on a mountaintop Halloween doesn’t come to you. You must go to Halloween. Prior to our moving to Fauquier County we lived in a suburban neighborhood where you could pound pavement in search of trick or treat treasures. Now we must travel in order to provide a Halloween experience for our grandson, Damian. For 15 years we have looted the same Marshall, VA housing development. This year we needed a change. We decided to find the scariest most frighteningly horrible place in the entire U. S. of A. We think we found it.

Our destination

Not everyone can score an invite to trick or treat The White House. It helps if you correspond regularly with our First Lady.

Yeah, we tight like that.

Yeah, we tight like that.

Actually, children of the armed forces and certain local school districts score the tickets each year. Our beloved principal, Joy Seward, was able to provide some of the Coleman Elementary School families with a true Halloween treat. The plan was for everyone to find their way downtown and then meet up in front of The White House. Being subway savvy ex-New Yorkers, we opted to take the Metro. Although the last time Don was on the subway he used a 50 cent token. He was unprepared to negotiate the fare machines at the Vienna Metro Station. After contemplating them, he decided to instruct Damian in the fine art of turnstile jumping while I and our friends The Bowen’s chose to pay our fares.

We had a 4:30 p.m. entry time and had to meet up with our group prior to lining up. How would we find them in this throng? Not to worry. Our fearless leader was standing on the street ready to round us up.

Despite the huge number of folks (and the fact that it was being run by the government) it was amazingly well organized. Everyone had their own lines based on the scheduled entry time. You were sent through as a group and your first stop was the security check point where you sent your bag through an airport-type scanner and you went through the metal detector. The aides that were organizing the entry point were all in costumes ranging from Harry Potter to dirty hippies. There was a huge police presence everywhere you went.

All Dressed Up With No Place To Go

If your idea of normal is dressing up like a side show freak and traipsing out into the dark then it started out as a pretty normal night.

Marcel & Noelle French Mimes

Each October a calling occurs and it summons the faithful to an undisclosed location in the wilds of West Virginia. Salem’s Lot reunites under the waning crescent moon to celebrate the season, cast spells, drink potions and practice rituals too horrible to elucidate in words. This year the focus was on creating and consuming potent potables made from rendered animals and distilled spirits (jello shots and vodka-soaked gummi bears). They also had a rousing success resurrecting a zombie cat. The members of the coven also cast spells to force the truth from the mouths of the assembled and after their souls were bared laughed mercilessly at each other’s bleeding wounds.

Yep, a good time was had by all.

Despite the strength of their magic, the Russo’s almost missed the festivities. Mrs. Russo had lent out her usual mode of transportation to her sister, who obviously did not subscribe to the rule of “don’t drink (blood) and drive”.

She was flying on a suspended license.

Stuck with having to employ a more earthly means of transportation, the Russo’s set out for the undisclosed haunted house that would be hosting this year’s festivities.

An uninterrupted line of red lights as far as the eye could see caused the Russo’s to decelerate and then come to a complete and utter stop. They waited and they waited and they waited some more. As the minutes transformed into hour intervals they searched for things to amuse and occupy themselves.

Aware that others in their group were also probably stuck in the same traffic, they desperately tried to make contact via their psychic abilities (because, of course, there’s no cell service in the middle of nowhere). Numerous emergency vehicles made their way to the scene. Interestingly, none left with lights and sirens. A lone, white van arrived being escorted by a police car.

Two silent prayers were released into the cosmos.

Eventually, as they always do, signs of life returned and the traffic started to move again. The Russo’s arrived at their party a little more grateful for the opportunity to spend time with their friends. They are not ones to take things for granted anymore.

Three-peat, bitches!

At the end of the night the Russo’s, once again, took home the Best Couples Costume trophy. However, they realized that the real prize was getting to spend time laughing with their friends.

To Infinity & Beyond

Life is good in an infinity pool.

Life is good in an infinity pool.

I definitely thought my outdoor swimming days were done for this season. Imagine our surprise when we arrived at The Bavarian Inn and saw this beauty in full operation. But I digress, let me start back at the beginning of our excursion.

The Bavarian Inn

The Bavarian Inn

This year for my birthday Don booked us into The Bavarian Inn at Shepherdstown, WV. I have wanted to come here for a while but every time I tried to stay the rooms I wanted to occupy were always all booked up. I only wanted to stay in the rooms that have the direct view of the Potomac River. Not only did Don score me one of those rooms, but our stay would be including the annual Oktoberfest celebration.

The original manor house.

My desire for this trip was to get to hike on the C & O Canal towpath and along the banks of the river so after we arrived & checked out our room we headed across the bridge. On the Maryland side, we were able to access the towpath near lock 38.

Now it’s a national park and on a beautiful day like today it was being enjoyed by many.

After a few miles, we were considering schlogging back up to our room for a nap. After all, we were expecting to have a big dinner at the Inn’s world class restaurant and would need some energy to chew. It was pretty warm for late September and by the time we scaled the heights back up to the grounds we were sweating and decided to check out the pool.

When we approached the pool we noticed a bar poolside that was busy serving cocktails to the numerous patrons who decided that enjoying the spectacular view in the water was decidedly better than sweating it up on the trail.

We saw this and ran for our bathing suits.

Since it was 5:00 o’clock and dinner reservations were for 7:30 we decided to hold cocktail hour in the pool. We did not regret it.

The boys sitting on the bow of Workyn Remote III

It only made sense to finish the summer the same way we started the summer. On Memorial Day we spent a great day floating on the Potomac River with our friends, The Mills. How could we resist an invitation to boat down to Cobb Island, MD to enjoy luncheon at Captain John’s Seafood on Labor Day? We packed our bag and headed down to our old stomping grounds of Woodbridge, VA where the Mills’ house their awesome boat.

Today’s destination was Cobb Island, MD. This small community is about 45 mile south of Washington, D.C. in Charles County. There is a seafood restaurant and market, well-known to the maritime set, named Captain John’s.

After the deluges from Saturday night, which rained upon but didn’t damper my fun at my friend’s Stacey & Sue’s Semi-Annual Labor Day Bash, I decided to check the Doppler radar this morning for the Potomac River. Consulting nautical charts, my horoscope and tea leaves left me with the impression that it was a 50/50 probability of rain at some point today.

Eat my wake!

By the time we hit the water the sun was shining brightly and it was probably one of the warmest days so far of the summer. We were all enjoying the sunshine and the spray of the water as Jamie flew downriver. Kim pointed out the landmarks: Neabsco Creek, Aquia Harbor, The 301 Bridge, Colonial Beach, etc. The perspective you get from out on the water gives you a new look at things you thought you were familiar with. Perspective is cool.

It was fun talking with the kids about how their new school year is going, their teachers, classes, baseball and dance. Don & Jamie discussed a business plan for a new endeavor Don is considering: The Evacuation Plan. Suffice it to say it is another post for another time (& someone else’s blog because I don’t want to get letters).

When we were seated at the restaurant Don immediately provoked the waitress by trying to order oysters on the half shell. She advised him that it wasn’t yet oyster season and he countered with, “It’s September 1st. A month with an R in it”. I suspected she and the rest of the kitchen staff spat in his food. The big boys & girls amused themselves by coloring while the little boys attempted to play Keno & place off track betting wagers.

Don & I enjoyed some very fresh seafood (not oysters), J.R. ordered chicken fingers and was told the truck didn’t bring them today. He then ordered a meatball sub and apparently the truck didn’t bring that either (apparently the truck driver was taking his Labor Day holiday seriously by not performing any labor). He did, however, walk out of there with enough hush puppies to last until next Labor Day. Once everyone was stuffed to the gills, we waddled out of there and back to the boat.

The after lunch plan was to head to this bay where the beach is loaded with fossilized shark’s teeth and let the kids swim. We headed up river and Captain Jamie did not like the cloud pattern he was seeing ahead of us. Doppler radar was once again called into play and a storm was straight ahead of us. Our current position was in direct sunlight but you could see the blackening of the sky and where the rain was falling toward the east. It seems the storm was moving quickly from west to east. Jamie’s seafaring ways and excellent navigational skills made him decide to just leisurely circle where we were and let the storm pass ahead of us. (By now I am counting life jackets and hearing the theme from Gilligan’s Island playing in my head) Jamie’s kids are shouting for him to turn around and go in 6 different directions. His steely countenance inspired confidence in us (except Don, who was reaching for the bottle of Jack Daniels he had purchased on Cobb Island). Actually, we stayed in the sun the whole time & never so much as got a drop of rain on us. The sure sign that Captain Jamie was our savior on the water was the rainbow that appeared low across the river. I knew then that we would be singing sea shanties to honor him once we made it back to shore (& consumed sufficient quantities of rum).

God letting us know that Jamie was The Man.

PreSeason

Zachary Russo Titan of football

Zachary Russo
Titan of football

As I perused the calendar last week at work I noticed that I had a significant chunk of time in which my presence would not be expected on the job. The start of school is breathing it’s fetid breath down the back of my neck. Normally, I do not despise the start of school. It heralds a return to order and schedules, both of which I am not opposed to in theory. But for some reason this year I am not at all ready to relinquish summer. I had room for one more trip before Don is called back to the classroom with Damian not far behind.

DSCN0679

Summer is at it’s tail end, like Steve’s dog Shady.

We contemplated heading to Nashville but instead felt the pangs that absence from my grandkids has created and instead went to North Carolina. Down here football season has started and my grandson, Michael is playing on his high school J. V. team and Zachary is playing on a local league. I miss these kids since I don’t get to see them at my will. The last time we were all together was when we celebrated Easter as we were returning from our Florida spring break trip.

My son, Steve, and his lovely wife Kim.

My son, Steve, and his lovely wife Kim.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy autumn. Rancho Russo and the surrounding countryside are a destination in the fall due to the orchards, vinyards and amazing Blue Ridge scenery. It’s just that my tomatoes are just getting ripe and I love being on my deck and in my garden and on my screen porch and in my pool. Speaking of which, I spent time in the pool today with my grandkids. It was warm here in North Carolina (unlike what I have been experiencing in Virginia) and the water was nice.

The Three Amigos: Daniel, Zachary and Damian.

Daniel starts kindergarten this year and Michael starts high school. These are exciting times but I can’t help but long for a little more fun in the sun. I think I may still be able to squeeze in a few days at the beach, maybe around my birthday in September.

So tomorrow I head homeward after spending this evening watching preseason football. Eric is at the Redskin’s game tonight. I am interested in if the Yankees still have a shot at the pennant. I will not let summer go just yet. But I have already made my plans to spend New Year’s in New York. After all, I am a realist. Underway Again

DSCN0657

The guys at Helen’s Hide Inn.

Since reuniting several years ago Don & his Navy buddies get together every 2 years. The first year we gathered at Rancho Russo & had a simply smashing July 4th at Great Meadows. The second reunion was a trip to Philadelphia to actually go on board their retired ship, the USS John F. Kennedy CVA-67. The third was a lakeside camping trip in Pennsylvania held over the hottest weekend in the past millennium. The fourth was headquartered at Admiral Duffey’s lakeside retreat and included a day in Boston touring the naval yard, ships and historic district. Attendance levels peak and trough but there have always been at least 5 of them.

This being the 5th get together we got a little bolder and decided to rent a house together. A core group member, Steve Duffey, would be unable to attend due to a prior commitment so it came down to 5 families. John Kress decided to get a map and draw lines between everyone’s houses and that gave them a geographic area that was somewhat central to all involved. That area turned out to be the Laurel Highlands of Pennsylvania.
